Cerro Matasiete

A short steep climb to the rock where an independence battle was decided.

Best time

Area
East coast
Duration
3–4 h
Difficulty

Matasiete is visible from half the island and it is the hill everyone ends up climbing. The route is short but serious: you gain height fast and the last stretch is hands-on scrambling between blocks of stone. At the top the view opens onto La Asunción, the whole valley and both coasts. The 1817 battle of Matasiete was fought here, one of those that decided independence in the east.
