Santiago Mariño, one of the leaders of independence in eastern Venezuela, was born on Margarita. His house in El Valle del Espíritu Santo is now a museum. It is a short walk from the Basilica, so both visits are done on foot and, together, tell the two stories that weigh most on the island: faith and independence.
