Cubagua held Nueva Cádiz, founded on the pearl rush and flattened by a tidal wave in 1541. It was the first Spanish city on South American soil, and today its foundations sit flush with the sand, protected as heritage. The island has no permanent residents and no services, and the water around it is excellent for snorkelling. History and sea in one trip.
